Ruboni Community Camp is a local eco friendly budget tourist accommodation at the edge of the Rwenzori Mountains national park nestled on the beautiful forested hills overlooking the Portal Peaks in the Rwenzori mountains.

Ruboni camp is a local community project around the Rwenzori mountains located at the trailhead of the Central circuit route to the Rwenzori mountains which is the indigenous Rwenzori mountains hiking trail used by the Duke of Abruzzi in the 1906 expedition to Mount Stanley.

This makes Ruboni community camp an ideal accommodation for your Rwenzori mountains climbing experiences from day hikes, nature walks to technical multi day Rwenzori mountains hiking expeditions.

Ruboni community camp boasts a strategic location at the base of the Rwenzori mountains with beautiful views of the Rwenzori mountains, the Ruboni Tourism village and the Mubuku river valley.

Located in a tropical rainforest, Ruboni community camp offers a cool setting for you to relax before and after your trek to the Rwenzori mountains of the moon.

Stay at Ruboni community camp’s accommodation in the Rwenzori mountains and enjoy delicious meals featuring both local meals and continental cuisines from the restaurant at the camp.

Ruboni community camp hosts both international and local tourists as well as community volunteers.

Ruboni community camp has 4 twin rooms with shared bathrooms and 4 larger self-contained twin cottages.

Guests can also camp on site by pitching their own tents or hiring tents from their tour operator.

The camp has hot running water from overhead showers, flush toilets, as well as toilets in the cottages.

Each bed is fitted with a mosquito net, and rooms have power that allow you to charge your gadgets.

How to get to Ruboni community camp

Ruboni community camp is located 17 kilometers from the Fort-Kasese highway and 27 Kilometers from Kasese town.

Going to Ruboni community camp from Kasese town, you branch off the left at Kisanyarazi 300 meters after crossing River Sebwe bridge from Kasese town and afew meters from the Nkenda Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) power substation on the left.

From Kampala, branch off to the right after crossing River Mubuku bridge just afew meters from the Nkenda UETCL power substation.

Ruboni community camp is located just afew meters opposite the UWA Rwenzori mountains national park staff quarters and the Mihunga lodge on the right in Mihunga village within the Ruboni Tourism village.

Rwenzori mountains hiking

During your stay at Ruboni community camp, you will enjoy a hike to the Rwenzori mountains of the moon.

Whether you are interested in technical multi day hike to summit Mount Stanley to 5,109m asl on Margherita peak or a short camping trek to Lake Mahoma or a 1 day Rwenzori mountains hike, Ruboni camp is a perfect starting point for your Rwenzori mountains adventure.

Ruboni hill hike

Ruboni hill hike takes you to a stunning viewpoint to see margherita peak, the highest point in the Rwenzori range where arranged camping is permitted.

The hill is at elevation of 2300m and a viewing point for Margherita peak and queen Elizabeth national park

The Ruboni hill/Mihunga hill hike takes 4 hours.

Bakonzo cultural experience

Ruboni Tourism village offers Bakonzo cultural performances with drumming, dancing and local handmade crafts for sale all in support of the local community.

Ruboni forest walk

Ruboni forest walk takes 3-4 hours, your guide will lead you into the mountains, where you can explore the lush forest surrounding the mountains. Throughout the walk, you will be engulfed in the rainforest, cross glacial rivers and learn more about the wildlife within the community. On a lucky day, you may sight the three horned chameleon which can only be found at altitudes of over 2,000 meters.

Coffee tour

Don’t miss the memorable coffee experience, visiting local coffee farms starting from the tree nursery bed, to the gardens and showing you how harvesting of the red coffee beans is harvested then dried before the final processing stage.

You will visit the processing center (Tom’s green coffee) or a local coffee farmland to be shown the different ways of processing coffee until it reaches the stage of preparing a cup of coffee to drink. You will see our local tools we use to grind coffee like the motor and grinding stone.

Local homestead visit

Visiting the ruboni community, you will have an opportunity to learn the bakonzo traditional foods, harvesting and cooking experience for the people living in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains.

Volunteer program

Ruboni community camp being a community initiative allows you an opportunity to volunteer at the camp to enjoy a closer experience with the communities around the Rwenzori mountains as well as have better experience exploring the Rwenzori mountains.

Ndughuthu Waterfall walk

The Ndughuthu Waterfalls comes from Nduwuthu river down the Rwenzori mountains. It takes an hour’s walk to reach the waterfall. Enjoy a walk through the lush green vegetation as you hike to Ndughuthu waterfalls.
