Mount Emin climbing|Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Emin is a Rwenzori Mountain range located on the boarder of congo and Uganda. It is 4798 meters (15741ft) that features summits of Umberto peak and Kraepelin peak. Mount Emin is a rugged and rocky mountain that was named after Mohammed Emin Pasha who explored East and central Africa.
Emin pasha was a German doctor, governor and explorer who traversed Africa in the early 19th century. Mount Emin can be both climbed from congo side and Uganda side. In early 1906, mount Emin was snowcapped like other Rwenzori ranges but due to global warming there are no snows at its peak.
Mount Emin used to be climbed from congo in late 90s but due to security insurgencies mount Emin is no longer climbed from congo side but is climbed from Uganda side to date. This mountain can be climbed through the central circuit trail, Bukurungu wilderness trail and kilembe trail.

Mount Emin can be trekked all year round but Rwenzori Mountain being the Rain maker, the best months with little rains are December, January, February, June, July and August. During these months the Rwenzori provides little rains with clear skies.

Day 1: Mihunga gate (1,651m) to Nyabithaba Camp (2,651m)
Your journey begins from mihunga at the park gate, where you will head out led by your guide to the Rwenzori Mountains. As you walk through the lush forests at the foothills of the majestic Rwenzori ranges, you will ascend steeply along the trail. This part of the mountain is known to have some wildlife, so keep an eye out for animals that call the Rwenzori Mountains home, such as the playful colobus monkeys and many others. After the ascent to Nyabithaba, you will check in at the camp for your dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Nyabithaba to John Matte Camp (3,505m)
On your second day of your Mount Emin hiking itinerary, you will wake up early and embark on a long walk of 7.5 km to John matte Camp, the second camp on the central circuit trail via the anticlockwise loop. Start with a hot breakfast before setting out for the journey that will take you from the forest zone via the bamboo zone until you reach the heather zone, where John Matte is located. The journey is quite challenging but offers incredible views of the beautiful landscapes, crossing rivers and several other streams of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Day 3: John Matte to Skull Cave Camp
Wake up very early and embark on your journey towards the summit of Mount Emin. Today you will walk through the challenging boggy terrain of the Rwenzori Mountains. This section is tough, but after you get through it, you’ll start climbing the beautiful Rwenzori Mountains.
After the steep ascent with rewarding views, you will reach the skull cave, where you will be camping for the night.
Day 4: Skull Cave to Lac de Luna Camp
Today, you will set out from Skull Cave to Lac de Luna Camp as you approach the day of summiting Mount Emin. You will navigate the challenging terrains of the Rwenzori Mountains, walking through steep ascents and occasional descents. You will notice a gain in the altitude as you continue with the ascent. Finally, you will reach the camp at La de Luna, where you will pitch ground tents for the night surrounded in the breathtaking landscapes.
Day 5: Summit Day to Mount Emin (4,798m)
Start off your journey from the camp to the summit of Mount Emin. The trail is quite steep and strenuous, but with the assistance of your experienced guides, you will navigate it smoothly while traversing bouldering rocks and steep ascents. After some time, you will reach Mount Emin. Enjoy the incredible views of the peak and the Congo. After taking some lovely pictures with your camera, you can begin your descent back to Lac de Luna camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 6: Descend to John Matte Camp
You will embark on the descent that takes you out of the mountain. From Lac de Luna camp, you will walk slowly towards John matte camp. The descent is relatively easier, although it is somewhat challenging due to the steep slopes leading to Bigo Camp. Enjoy the stunning views of the towering peaks, which include Margherita and Baker. Upon reaching John Matte, enjoy dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Return to mihunga gate (1,651m)
The final days of Mount Emin hiking itinerary take you from John Matte Camp through Nyabithaba and out of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Continue your journey by stopping at Nyabithaba Camp for a meal. Embark on your journey through the towering trees at the base of Mount Rwenzori, and finally you will exit and sign out of the park.
