The Rwenzori mountains lie along the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The highest point in the Rwenzori mountain ranges raises to 5,109m asl at Margherita peak.

 The mountain range stretches about 120 km (75mi) in length and 65 km (40mi) in width. The Rwenzori mountains are surrounded by the Rwenzori mountains national park stretching from Bundibugyo district to Kasese district in Uganda and surrounded by the Virunga national park in the DRC.

The Rwenzori mountains are famously known as the “Mountains of the moon”

The Rwenzori mountains are famous for Mountaineering or trekking. The most popular expedition across the ranges is the 1906 expedition by the Luigi Amedeo the Duke of Abruzzi. He made sixteen summits in the range, including the six (6) main peaks of Margherita peak, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Alexandra peak, Mount Gessi, Mount Luigi di savoia, etc

The Rwenzori mountain ranges can be scaled in 7 days to 12 days to summit one of the 1 to over 10 peaks in the range.

The six (6) major mountains in the range are Mount Stanley (5,109m asl, 16,762ft), Mount Speke (4,890 metres (16,040 ft)), Mount Baker (4,843 metres (15,889 ft)), Mount Emin (4,798 metres (15,741 ft)), Mount Gessi (4,715 metres (15,469 ft)) and Mount Luigi di Savoia (4,627 metres (15,180 ft)).

Mount Stanley has two (2) subsidiary peaks of Alexandra at  (5,091m, 16,703ft)   and Margherita peak the highest standing at (5,109m asl, 16,762ft).

The best time for trekking is during the dry seasons; mid-December to end of March, June-August.

The Rwenzori mountains have over 6 lakes which makes it a permanent source of water and one of the sources of the River Nile
