Rwenzori mountain huts along the Central circuit route

Rwenzori mountain huts along the Central circuit route total to seven (7) in number making a circuit across the centre of the Rwenzori mountains ranges from Mihunga gate back to Mihunga gate which usually takes a standard 7 days trekkng in the Rwenzori mountains with a summit of Margherita peak.

The Central circuit route famously known for the 1906 expedition by the Duke of Abruzi is the oldest Rwenzori mountains trekking route which starts at the Mihunga gate of the Rwenzori mountains national park.

The Central circuit route of the Rwenzori mountains has several mountains huts, cabins and resting points making a circuit in the centre of the Rwenzori mountains crossing River Kyoho, River Mahoma, River Mubuku and River Bujuku.

NYABITABA HUT

Nyabitaba hut is the first hut and camp in the Rwenzori mountains along the Central circuit route at an elevation of 2,651m asl.

This camp in the Rwenzori mountains is named after Tobacco in the local Lukonzo language called “ebithaba” as the place was popular for Tobacco which can still be traced around Nyabitaba camp.

Nyabitaba hut is located 7 Km from Mihunga gate and 2.5 Km from Lake Mahoma which is the nearest and lowest glacial lake in the Rwenzori mountains ranges in western Uganda.

Day hikes to Nyabitaba hut in the Rwenzori mountains national park are popular for people interested in the Rwenzori mountains short treks.

Nyabitaba hut can also be accessed through 3 days nature walk to Lake Mahoma along the Mahoma nature camping trail which also starts at Mihunga gate turning left 300 metres from the gate.

NYAMULEJU HUT

The Nyamuleju hut consists of a camping shelter usually used while on a camping trek in the Rwenzori mountains along the Central circuit trail. This is the second hut in the Rwenzori mountains along the Central circuit trail.

Nyamuleju camp consists of a latrine, a kitchen with a fire place and a raised sleeping hut for pitching tents at night. The camp is located along the trail path to John Maate camp.

A trek to Nyamuleju hut gives amazing views of the moss covered hanging rocks and Mount Kijangoma standing high across the Mubuku river valley.

The Mount luigi di Savoia glacier can be seen from this camp on a clear day which is always mistaken for the Mount Stanley glacier by climbers along the central circuit trail

JOHN MAATE HUT

John maate hut along the Central circuit trail is named after John Mathe the founding chairperson of the local community mountaineering organization that helped in developing mountain tourism in the Rwenzori mountains to benefit the community with the help of USAID and the government of Uganda in 1993.

John Maate hut sits on a raised hill surrounded by heather trees near the banks of River Bujuku at an elevation of 3,505m asl.

This is the third camp in the Rwenzori mountains national park along the Central circuit trail.

BUJUKU HUT

The Bujuku hut is the fourth camp along the Central circuit trail located at an elevation of 3,962m asl at the base of Mount Speke.

Bujuku hut is always used as the summit camp for Mount Speke along the Central circuit trail. Your stay at Bujuku hut will reward you with magical views of the Bujuku valley, Mount Baker, Mount Stanley and the Stulmans pass to Mount Speke.

Bujuku hut can be accessed in a 4 days trek in the Rwenzori mountains along the Central circuit route. This is one of the most beautiful treks in the Rwenzori mountains along the Rwenzori Central circuit climbing route.

ELENA HUT

Elena hut is the fifth hut along the Rwenzori mountains climbing Central circuit trail. This is the summit camp for Mount Stanley to Alexandra peak 5,091m asl, Albert Peak and Margherita peak 5,109m asl.

Currently, Elena hut is the smallest of all huts along the Central circuit trail though plans to expand the camp are underway by Rwenzori mountains national park and the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Elena camp is located at 4,505m asl and gives views of all the major mountains in the Rwenzori mountains ranges on a clear day.

Elena hut is located about 3-5 Kms from the base of the Savoia glacier. Elena camp is also know as Margherita A camp or Margherita1 camp.

Lake Kitandara hut

Lake Kitandara hut is nestled at the banks of lower Lake Kitandara giving you one of the most beautiful views and feelings at the camp in the Rwenzori mountains.

Lake Kitandara hut is the sixth camp in the Rwenzori mountains. It gives you a feeling of a vacation on an exclusive island far away in the Ocean as your watch clouds flying across high up the peaks. It is located at an altitude of 4,066m asl surrounded by Mount Savoia, Mount Baker and the Weismann’s peaks across the Lower Lake Kitandara lake.

Lake Kitandara hut and camp is the summit camp for Mount Baker and the Weismmann’s peaks in the Rwenzori mountains along the Central circuit trail.

A 6 days trek will take you to Lake Kitandara camp to summit Weismmann’s peak 4,620m asl along the Central circuit route.

Guy yeoman hut

The Guy Yeoman hut is the seventh and last camp on the Central circuit trail located on the ridge overlooking the Mubuku river valley.

You will cross River Mubuku several times to reach Guy yeoman bypassing the volcanic rocks and famous rock shelter of the 1906 expedition to the Rwenzori mountains of the moon led by the duke of Abruzzi. Guy Yeoman hut is set at an altitude of 3,505m asl. Trekking to Guy yeoman can be challenging during the wet season as you have to cross the Mubuku river several times and several slippery and boggy areas.
