Rwenzori Mountains Huts and Camps

Rwenzori mountains and camps, there are several huts and camps on both Rwenzori mountains trails, the central circuit trail, kilembe trail and the bukurungu wilderness camping trail. The huts are constructed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Rwenzori mountains huts and camps

Rwenzori mountains huts and camps are good for both solo hikers and group hikers.

The central circuit trail and the kilembe trail have huts/cabins with beds while on the bukurungu wilderness trail there are shelters where you set your tents and put your sleeping mat to lie on.

There are climbers who prefer staying in huts and others prefer camping in tents while in the mountains. The huts are constructed in the 5 different vegetation zones of the mountain.

The huts are built of wood material designed to keep you warm and dry giving you a comfortable sleep while on your trek. The Rwenzori mountains being called the Rain Maker, the weather changes anytime be it dry or wet season.

The huts are positioned at right distances to enable enough acclimatization as well as offering clear views of the landscapes all around the Rwenzori mountain ranges.

Rwenzori Mountains huts and camps central circuit huts

The huts in these camps are comfortable and good for the mountain weather conditions, and bujuku hut that is beneath the three mountains, Mount Baker, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke has an oven where to set fire for warming the hut more and keeping the climbers warm and comfortable especially during the cold conditions.

The central circuit huts include:,

  • Nyabithaba hut at 2651m
  • Johnmaate hut at 3505m
  • Bujuku hut at 3962m
  • Elena hut at 4541m
  • Kitandara hut at 4023m
  • Guyeoman hut at 3505m

Kilembe Trail huts

The kilembe trail is a private trail established in 2010 by an Australian investor. The trail has eight camps and the huts includes:,

  • Sine hut at 2585m
  • Kalalama hut at 3147m
  • Kiharo camp at 3460m
  • Mutinda camp at 3688m
  • Butawu camp at 3974m
  • Hunswick camp at 3974m
  • Bugata camp at 4062m
  • Margherita camp at 4485m

Bukurungu wilderness Trail campsites

Bukurungu wilderness trail is the newest trail established in 2015 that is operated by Bujuku Eco Tours and Travel company. The trail is best for hikers who wants to explore the Rwenzori mountain through the less explored path and immersing in the real mountain diversity of the Rwenzori .

The bukurungu trail has three camps where they pitch tents meaning no closed cabins but shelters where they put tents inside for overnights, before joining the centrail circuit trail at johnmaate camp.

The bukurungu trail camps are as follows before joining the central circuit trail.

  • Kasanzi camp at 2354m
  • Kambeho camp at 3290m
  • Lamia camp at 3580m

While trekking on the bukurungu trail, note that the first camp Kasanzi camp is in the montane forest zone that has green shelters where we set tents inside for camping. The second camp kambeho camp is an open camp with no shelter because the Uganda wildlife authority have not yet constructed a shelter at this camp, after setting up the tents, they cover up with waterproof tarplins above the tent and this is done by skilled guides and porters.

The third camp lamia camp situated in the huge heather forest near the congo border has comfortable shelters where they set tents.
