Rwenzori Mountains Animal Life

The Rwenzori mountains in the Rwenzori mountains national park are home to over 70 mammal species documented. These include six Albertine rift endemic species, four species endemic to the park and three of the species are rare. The mammal species include the African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), the Southern tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax arboreus), the Eastern chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), the Black-and-white colobus monkeys (Simia polycomos), the L’Hoest’s monkey (Allochrocebus lhoesti), the brightly coloured Ruwenzori turaco (Gallirex johnstoni), Red duiker and the three horned chameleone.

Most animals can be seen on a short trek or a nature walk in the Rwenzori mountains of the moon especially along the Central circuit hiking route and the Kilembe Rwenzori hiking routes.

Birds

The Rwenzori mountains are home to over 217 bird species documented in the thick forests of the Rwenzori mountains national park.

Among these, 17 species are endemic making it an Important Birding Area (IBA).

Bird species in the Rwenzori mountains include the Rwenzori Turaco, Barred Long-tailed cuckoo, Long-eared owl, Handsome francolin, Cinnamon chested bee-eater, Archer’ Robin-chat, White-starred Robin, Rwenzori batis, Montane sooty Boubou, Lagden’s bush shrike, Slender-billed starling, Blue-headed sunbird, Golden winged sunbird, Strange weaver, Several varieties of Barbets, Greenbuls, Apalises, IIIadopsis, Flycatchers, Crimsonwings, etc
