Tour Overview.
The 3 Days Rwenzori Mountains short trek To John Maate Camp takes you to the mossy heather zone above 3,500 metres asl. John Maate camp is strategically located to give you rewarding views of Margherita peak 5,109m asl. It is near the banks of Bujuku river which allows you to cross to the lower Bigo bog an area common for the “mountain goats” (Red duikers) as you approach Bigo camp.

Day 1: NYAKALENGIJA (1615m asl.) – NYABITABA CAMP (2651m asl.)
The 3 Days Rwenzori Mountains short trek To John Maate Camp follows the Rwenzori Central circuit trail and starts at the Rwenzori Mountains National park Mihunga gate.
Mount Rwenzori Nature Walk To John Maate Camp

After an early morning breakfast, your driver guide will transfer you from your hotel around Kasese to Mihunga park gate. Receive briefing from the park wardens and induction for the trip while meeting your guides and porters.
Thereafter embark on your trip into the park taking the trail which follows a thick forest along the Mubuku River, crossing its Mahoma River tributary before starting a long, steep climb up onto a massive ridge to reach Nyabitaba hut. During this part of the trip you may hear chimpanzee and see black and white colobus, blue monkey and the brilliantly coloured Rwenzori turraco.
Hike Duration: 6 -7 hours. Elevation height: 1,036m

Day 2: NYABITABA (2651m asl.) – JOHN MATTE CAMP (3505m asl.)
From Nyabitaba follow the trail that drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers.
Passing through the bamboo forest, traverse through a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke can be seen before passing into the zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. Finally reach John Matte Hut after passing through the tiring bog,  for dinner and overnight at the hut. NOTE: after reaching john  maate camp, when the weather clears you will view the stanley glaciers that climbers cross before starting a short ascend on the rocks and reach the margherita peak.  a few metres from john maate camp, you cross the bujuku river on board walk that leads you to the upper big bog , bog means an area that is wet and muddy. this section before they constructed the board walks , people used to step on tussock plants jumping from one tussock to another and they slip and fall in the mud. then they called it bigo bog and bigo means falling down in the bakonzo dialect of the people who leave around the mountains. bigo is a water catchment area and has been recognised as the main water catchment area in the Rwenzori mountains by UNESCO and recognised as a ramsar site.

Day 3: JOHN MATTE (3505m asl.) – NYABITABA (2651m asl.) – PARK GATE (1615m asl.).
From John Matte climb downs from the same trail to Nyabitaba Camp for your lunch. along the trail, you can chance a sight of blue monkeys feeding on the bamboo shots. This will take about 5 – 6 hours.
After your lunch, descend back to the park gate where you will be met by our driver guide to drive you back to Kasese for an overnight or to proceed to your next destination with Bujuku Ecotours or drop off at Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.
The descend from Nyabitaba to the Park gate will take 3 – 4 hours to complete your 3 days nature walk to John Maate camp trek.
