The 3 Days Rwenzori mountains climbing Mahoma Nature camping trail takes one of the most popular camping trails in the Rwenzori Mountains.

This mahoma trail takes you through different vegetation zones like the montane forest zone, the bamboo zone and heather zone.

Along this trail expect unique flora like the giant lobelia plant , scenecio, elicamela johnstonie and the usnea like beard hanging on the heather trees.

The Mahoma Nature trail is a wild camping trail in the Rwenzori mountains starting at the Mihunga gate . The highest point on this trail is 3,000m asl as you approach Lake Mahoma.

Day 1: Transfer from Kasese to Mihuna Park gate to Omukakiiza

The 3 Days Rwenzori mountains climbing Mahoma Nature camping trail trek will start after your breakfast.
You will be picked by our guide and head to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park gate in Mihunga. Receive briefing from your guide or a ranger.
The hike starts at the park gate, taking the trail to the left. Gradually reaching garden plots and elephants grass and then join the forest zone.
This takes you through the pristine rainforest of kyambogho ridge with a view of the Mubuku Valley. Thereafter climb the heavily forested ridge which is home to many primates. Spot several primates like the black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey and occasionally the L’hoest monkey.
Reach Omu’kaKizza Rest Camp at 2,977metres for an overnight. Enjoy the magnificent views over the Rwenzori foothills and Kasese town from 2,977 metres above.

Day 2: Hike from Omukakiiza to Lake Mahoma
The second day you hike to Lake Mahoma. The forest gives way to a long narrow moss covered ridge up to 3,000m asl.
Trek through an incredibly beautiful forest of giant heather covered in layers of bright green moss.
You will follow the footprints of mountain Elephants through the bamboo and heather forest. You may spot and watch them having a drink at the hot spring.
The ridge will lead you to the Rukenga valley where you will see the everlasting flowers (mimulopsiseliotti) and the giant lobelia. You then cross to Lake Mahoma Camp for the night.
From Lake Mahoma with a clear sky you can see Mt.Baker, Mt.Stanley and Portal Peaks.

Day 3: Descend from Lake Mahoma to Nyabitaba to Mihunga gate.
After breakfast go for a walk around Lake Mahoma. Thereafter descend back through the bamboo zone to the junction of the Central circuit trail.
Descend past Nyabitaba to the Mpanga ridge to join the Mubuku valley. This is a home of three horned chameleon.
After a rest at the resting point, descend back to Mihunga park gate. Our driver guide will pick you for transfer to your hotel.

You can visit the local community around the park to buy souvenir or local items and food. A traditional dance performance can be arranged in advance from the local community group. You can receive a trekking certificate from the Rwenzori Mountains national park on request.
