The 6 Days Rwenzori mountains camping trek to Lake Bujuku via the Bukurungu trail takes you on an adventure in the wilderness through the less explored and remote Bukurungu wilderness camping trail to discover the hidden beauty of the Rwenzori mountains of the moon solely handled and guided by Bujuku Eco tours with our experienced and technical mountain guides.

With views of the 4 major mountain lakes in the Rwenzori mountains ranges; you will trek through the community on the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Kasanzi, explore the rain forests to Kambeho camp and traverse the heather zone beyond Lamia camp bypassing the Mughuli lakes.

Passing between the portal peaks and Mount Gessi and Mount Emin; descend down to River Bujuku as you join the Rwenzori mountains central circuit trail at the start of the Lower Bigo bog.

Day 1: TRANSFER FROM ENTEBBE TO KASESE

Transfer from Entebbe and arrival in Kasese for an overnight.

Overnight in Kasese town

 

DAY2: TRANSFER FROM KASESE TOWN TO KASANZI CAMP (2354M).

Have an early morning breakfast before checking out of your hotel for transfer to Omukorukumi before hiking through the community of Kasanzi starting off your trek before you enter the Rwenzori mountains national park through the Bukurungu wilderness camping trail.

You will meet your porters and have an interaction as you give away your backpack for carrying.

Proceed hiking with some resting points along the community trail before entering the park to arrive at Kasanzi camp 1km into the tropical forest for a rest.

The climb from Omukorukumi to Kasanzi camp takes 4-6 hours.

 

DAY 3: HIKE FROM KASANZI CAMP TO KAMBEHO CAMP (3290M)

After a hot breakfast depart for Kambeho camp (Kambeho means a place of coldness in Lhukonzo) also locally known as Lhume camp named after River Lhume.

Getting to this camp takes you through the heather trees (Ericathias) with lots of moss hanging – over these trees like the old man beard.

Kambeho camp lies in the heather zone which is characterized by views of hanging valleys and it is through the same zone where both varieties of monkeys can be met- The black colobus monkeys, Black and white, and Vervet monkeys. It is the zone of the Rwenzori Turaco, a rare beautiful bird in the park

Arrive at Kambeho camp in the late afternoon for hot drink, dinner and an overnight.

DAY 4: HIKE FROM KAMBEHO CAMP TO LAMIA CAMP

Early morning leave Kambeho camp after a somewhat cold night climbing along River Lhume taking the Mughuli pass the only steep bypass on the trail.

After a steep climb on Mughuli bypass descend down past Lake Mughuli which is within a strong MTN network service to allow you catch up with some mobile phone calls before proceeding to Lamia camp.

There are several unnamed beautiful peaks which can easily be climbed by those interested as they acclimatize for climbing the Portal peaks and Mount Gessi. Around the camp, you can easily explore the water falls which gives the real taste of the Rwenzori mountains waters. Overnight at Lamia camp

DAY 5: HIKE FROM LAMIA CAMP TO BIGO CAMP 3,450m asl

This is your last day along the Bukurungu Rwenzori mountains climbing route joining the Central circuit trail at the beginning of the lower Bigo bog before crossing River Bujuku.

Descend down from Lamia camp down past the Bukurungu lakes before reaching the Bujuku River bridge on the lower Bigo walk boards.

Climb gently to Bigo camp to pitch your tents for an overnight or sleep at John Maate hut for a warmer night.

DAY 6: HIKE FROM BIGO CAMP TO LAKE BUJUKU (3962m) AND DESCEND BACK TO BIGO CAMP.

Today we enter the alpine zone and trek all the way up to the camp on the north-eastern flank of Mt. Stanley preparing to summit Margherita peak the next morning.

Return to Irene Camp for a quick lunch before climbing down to Bigo Camp for an overnight.

DAY 7: BIGO CAMP – MIHUNGA GATE (1651M) – KASESE TOWN.

Wake up to a hot breakfast at Bigo camp with the sun rising through the fog over the River Bujuku valley.

Pack your backpack and start the descend on your last day of the 6 Days Rwenzori mountains camping trek to Lake Bujuku via the Bukurungu trail.

Continue descending past Nyamuleju campsite before reaching the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers. Trek up to Nyabithaba Camp for a hot lunch and some rest as you reflect on your 6 days Rwenzori trek.

After resting, you can hike to Lake Mahoma at 3,000m asl for about 1.5 hours before returning to Nyabithaba camp and subsequently descending down to Mihunga gate to exit the Rwenzori mountains.

 

Descent duration: 7 – 8 hours

Accommodation and overnight in Kasese town.

 

DAY 8: TRANSFER FROM KASESE TO ENTEBBE

After breakfast at your hotel in Kasese, you will check out of your accommodation.

Thereafter, transfer back to ENTEBBE airport for departure.
